The Couldn’t Be Happiers are a folk duo consisting of Jodi Hildebran Lee (vocals, drums, harmonica) and Jordan Crosby Lee (guitar, vocals).
Jodi and Jordan first met in Winston-Salem, NC, back in 2013 at a picker’s circle that would gather monthly to play old-time and bluegrass music. Jordan stopped attending after he graduated from law school and moved back to Texas for a job. But one day in 2017–in his office in San Antonio on a Saturday–he heard a song on a curated folk playlist that reminded him of one Jodi used to sing in the circle. He sent it to her and nervously waited for a reply. They had been friends, but they weren’t close. Would she think it was weird that he was thinking of her? Fast forward a year later, and the two were married in New Orleans.
They have a new album out called, “couple(t)s”
On “Pretty Polly’s” inspiration
This song was inspired by the old folk murder ballad of the same name, which is based on the so-called Gosport Tragedy that supposedly took place in 1760s England. The original ballad is built around rhymed couplets that tell the tale of a man who murders his pregnant girlfriend in the forest and buries her in a shallow grave. We never liked the ending of the story, so we rewrote it. In our version, Polly’s revenge is much more satisfying than simply coming back as a ghost to haunt her ex-love.
